Hello friends! So today we are learning something special, which is conductivity and salinity. Okay, these are very big words, but don't panic, we will take it apart, making it so simple even a lil baby can understand!
Salinity is a measure of how salty water is. If you add salt to a glass of water. When you add salt, the water saturates all the more. Salinity shows how salty that water is. Now, conductivity is a different but related concept. Conductivity — how easily electricity can pass through water. This is really important because electricity powers a lot of things in our world!
Salinity and conductivity are related because when salt is dissolved in water it is broken down into ions or small particles. These ions are what allow the electricity to pass through the water. So, with a lot of salt in the water, it can conduct electricity better. So, if we know how well electricity travels through the water, known as conductivity, we can use that to gauge how salty the water is, known as salinity.
Now, conductivity and salinity are related, but it is nice to understand that the relationship isn’t always direct. Other things can affect how freely the electricity runs through the water. As an example, temperature might influence the conductivity. Electricity is able to move more freely through warmer water. Pressure also plays a role. Scientists have to take into account all these factors when measuring salinity in water. This means they need to be careful and collect many measurements in order to get accurate results.
There are many methods of measuring salinity in water, but one of the simplest methods uses a device known as a conductivity meter. This specialized tool passes a low-voltage electric current through the water. It indicates the ease of electricity flow through it. Then it gives us the salinity, based on what it gathered. In fact, this method is much more efficient as it is fast, accurate, and does not involve using toxic chemicals that can kill the environment. This makes scientists like to work with this as they are one working class of people.
It’s also worthwhile to dispel some myths that people have about conductivity and salinity. Read 1 of 6People share a misconception or misunderstanding about conductivity and salinity. Though related, they are separate concepts. Some people think that fresh water doesn't conduct current at all, but actually that's also wrong! Fresh water hardly any salt but it contains some ions. It can conduct electricity because of these ions, just not as well as salty water. Understanding these differences is vital in learning about water in different ways.
Now let’s talk about why measuring conductivity and salinity is so important for scientists. Salinity and conductivity provide scientists with a tremendous amount of information concerning oceanic water movement, the characteristics of oceanic currents, and salinization of fresh water system by the mixing of salty water. This knowledge allows them to become more familiar with the water cycle. They also examine how shifts in weather and sea height impact the oceans and its inhabitants. This allows scientists to use this information to make informed decisions on how to manage our oceans and their resources.
